What is PET-CT Scan?

A PET-CT Scan combines Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT) in one advanced imaging procedure.

  • CT scan provides detailed structural images of organs.
  • PET scan highlights metabolic activity inside the body.

Together, PET-CT delivers highly accurate insights, helping doctors detect cancer, monitor treatment, and identify other health issues early.

How Does PET-CT Scan Work?

  • A small dose of radioactive tracer is injected into the body.
  • These tracers attach to areas with high metabolic activity (like cancer cells).
  • The PET scanner detects these signals, while the CT provides a 3D structural map.
  • The combined image clearly shows both abnormal cell activity and exact organ location.

FAQs

PET-CT Scan – Frequently Asked Questions

What is a PET-CT scan?
PET-CT combines Positron Emission Tomography (metabolic activity) with CT (anatomy) in a single study, giving highly accurate images to detect, stage and monitor diseases like cancer.
Is PET-CT safe?
Yes. It uses a small dose of tracer and diagnostic-level radiation comparable to other medical scans. Your doctor will assess suitability if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
How long does the procedure take?
Plan for 2–3 hours total: check-in and glucose check, tracer injection and uptake (45–60 mins), followed by scanning (20–30 mins).
Do I need to fast?
For most oncology PET-CT scans, fast for 6 hours. Only plain water is allowed. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours prior. Diabetic patients should follow our special prep instructions.
What conditions can PET-CT detect?
Cancer detection & staging, treatment response, suspected recurrence; brain tumors, epilepsy focus, dementia; cardiac viability & perfusion; infection/inflammation of unknown origin.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear warm, comfortable clothes without metal. Bring previous reports, films, and medication list. Avoid jewelry and metal accessories.
When will I get my report?
Preliminary findings are reviewed the same day; verified report is typically available within 24 hours. Urgent cases can be expedited.
Can I take my regular medicines?
Most medicines are fine with water. If you’re diabetic, inform us—insulin/oral hypoglycemics may need timing adjustments on the day of scan.
Are there post-scan restrictions?
You can resume normal activities. Drink plenty of water to flush the tracer. Keep some distance from infants/pregnant women for a few hours as a precaution.
How much does PET-CT cost?
At our centre: Whole-Body PET-CT ~ ₹18,000; Brain PET-CT ~ ₹15,000; Cardiac PET-CT ~ ₹20,000; Oncology Follow-up ~ ₹12,500. Final cost varies by tracer and clinical need.
